What is a salary certificate and how do I get one in the UAE?

A salary certificate is an official letter from your employer stating your position, salary and length of service, stamped and signed by HR. You request it from your HR department — usually free and issued within 1–3 working days. Banks, landlords and embassies ask for it as proof of income.

Salary certificate vs salary transfer letter

They're different documents. A salary certificate simply proves your income — used for renting, visas, or opening a bank account. A salary transfer letter commits your employer to paying your salary into a specific bank, and banks demand it for personal loans because it's their security. Never sign a salary transfer letter casually: it effectively locks your salary to that bank until the loan is cleared.

What it should contain

Company letterhead, your full name and passport/Emirates ID number, job title, joining date, monthly salary (often split into basic and allowances — that split matters for gratuity), the purpose or addressee ('To: Emirates NBD'), and HR's stamp and signature. Many banks reject certificates older than 30 days, so request it fresh.

Common questions

Is a salary certificate free?

Usually, yes — most UAE employers issue it free through HR or a self-service portal within 1–3 working days. Some charge a small admin fee for repeated requests.

Why does the basic salary on it matter?

Because gratuity and several bank calculations use basic salary, not the full package. A package heavy on allowances with a low basic builds far less end-of-service money — check yours with the gratuity calculator.
