Spot the Scam

UAE residents lose real money to investment fraud every week — Ponzi schemes, fake brokers, “trading bots”, recruitment cons. Describe what you were offered and Mizanek will flag the warning signs and tell you how to verify it. The rule that beats almost every scam: if it's guaranteed, urgent, or pays you to recruit, walk away.

Is this a scam? Check it.

Paste the message or describe the offer — Mizanek assesses the structure and claims, never names a company as guilty, and always points you to verify the licence.

Educational fraud-awareness, not advice. Always verify a licence yourself.

The scams that target the UAE

Learn the shape of each one — once you can name the pattern, you can see it coming.

Ponzi / fake investment fund

Early investors are paid with money from new investors, not real profit. It looks great until the new money slows — then it collapses and most people lose everything.

Warning signs

  • Guaranteed or fixed high returns (e.g. “2% a day”, “20% a month”)
  • Pressure to reinvest profits instead of withdrawing
  • Vague about how the money actually earns
  • Trouble or delays when you try to take money out

MLM / network marketing as “investment”

Your “return” comes mostly from recruiting other people below you, not from a real product or asset. The maths only works for the few at the top.

Warning signs

  • You earn by signing up friends and family
  • A joining fee or compulsory “starter package”
  • Tiers, “teams”, downlines and recruitment bonuses
  • Income claims based on building a “network”

Unregulated forex / “trading bot” / copy-trading

An offshore “broker” or an account manager promises to trade forex or run a bot that prints profit. Your deposit is often just gone, or trapped behind endless “fees”.

Warning signs

  • Account manager who trades “for you”
  • Guaranteed profit with high leverage
  • Broker registered offshore or nowhere
  • You must pay a fee to withdraw your “profit”

Crypto / “AI trading” platform scams

A slick app or Telegram group shows your balance growing. When you try to cash out, you’re asked for “tax”, “fees” or more deposits — the balance was never real.

Warning signs

  • Pay a fee or “tax” to unlock withdrawals
  • App not in the official store / sent as a link
  • Contact only via WhatsApp or Telegram
  • Screenshots of huge profits, celebrity endorsements

“Pig butchering” / romance investment

Someone builds a friendship or relationship online over weeks, then introduces a “great” trading platform they personally use. It’s a long con; the platform is fake.

Warning signs

  • An online stranger steers talk toward investing
  • A “private” or “exclusive” platform only they recommend
  • Early small withdrawals work — to build trust before the big deposit
  • Reluctance to meet or video-call

Guaranteed-rental / off-plan property traps

A “guaranteed” rental yield or a quick off-plan flip is sold hard. The guarantee is often unfunded, the developer unregistered, or the resale market nothing like promised.

Warning signs

  • “Guaranteed” ROI on property (real yields vary)
  • Heavy pressure and “today only” pricing
  • Developer or agent not registered with the land department / RERA
  • Asked to pay into a personal account, not escrow

Regulator / bank impersonation

Scammers copy the name, logo or even a real licence number of a regulated firm or bank to look legitimate, then collect deposits or details.

Warning signs

  • Lookalike name or domain of a known firm
  • A licence number you can’t find on the official register
  • Unsolicited calls/messages “from the bank” asking to move money
  • Anything pushing urgency around your account

Before you ever send money

  • Verify the licence yourself on the official SCA register (sca.gov.ae) or the CBUAE list — not a link or screenshot they send you.
  • Assume “guaranteed returns” is a lie. Real investing never guarantees a fixed profit.
  • Never pay a fee to “release” your profit. That is the single most common trap.
  • Slow down. Urgency is the scammer's main tool. A real opportunity survives a few days of checking.
  • ✅ If you've already paid, stop sending money and report it to the SCA, the CBUAE, or UAE Police (eCrime).
